Amazing Grace, a 1991 42' Grand Banks
Classic, is wintering with us
this season to undergo a refit of most of her
systems and decking. We're After removing all of her
original wiring, we installed a new,
custom-designed DC electrical system. Her an
old technology, a ferroresonant charger and
defective inverter, were removed and replaced
with a modern, safe and effective Xantrex
inverter/charger. All of her batteries, battery
cables and boxes were replaced with proper tie
downs in ABYC approved boxes, along with new switches to simplify
battery management.
To ensure the batteries are getting charged
properly two automatic charging
relays (ACRs) were installed. Basically,
Amazing Grace has been completely
rewired, and over-current protection was added
throughout the vessel to meet ABYC Standards requirements.
After we completed the all the rewiring, we removed her forward and aft toilets and
plumbing and installed a new Vacuflush system
plumbed to her fresh water system. Her macerator pump and associated wiring
was also replaced.
Lastly, we removed and glassed over several
unused through hulls.

Years of water ingress rotted the bow sprit, and
the owner wanted this fixed. After removing the bowsprit,
while in our covered shop, our carpenter completely gutted
the rotting wood and rebuilt it with modern,
water-resistant composites. The teak planking
was replaced to maintain her classic aesthetics.
Her after-deck hatches were also severely water damaged. DBY rebuilt the two large hatches, re-bedding all deck
hardware, and repairing the cabin house doors that had wood rot at the bottom. The superstructure of this Grand Banks was then stripped and re-varnished.
All of her windows prepped, primed and painted, then her hull was cleaned,
machine compounded and waxed to bring back her gel coat luster.
This refit would not be complete without her bottom
receiving a fresh coat of anti-fouling paint. Both propellers were
removed, prepped and had PropSpeed applied. This new product dramatically reduces the amount of barnacles
adhering to her underwater propulsion gear.
She is almost ready for her spring launch debut and another
20 years of pleasure cruising!
